Cognitive trajectories over 4 years among HIV-infected women with optimal viral suppression
Conclusions: Cognitive difficulties remain among HIV+ women despite persistent viral suppression. In some instances, VS women are worse than NVS women, reinforcing the need for novel adjunctive therapies to attenuate cognitive problems.

Implementing Implementation Science: An Approach for HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment Programs.
Abstract Though great progress has been realized over the last decade in extending HIV prevention, care and treatment in some of the least resourced settings of the world, a substantial gap remains between what we know works and what we are actually achieving in HIV programs. To address this, leaders have called for the adoption of an implementation science framework to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of HIV programs. Implementation science (IS) is a multidisciplinary scientific field that seeks generalizable knowledge about the magnitude of, determinants of and strategies to close the gap between evidenc...

HIV awareness week- Southampton
This year, Southampton HIVE’s committee decided to set themselves a challenge of holding an entire week of events in the run up to World AIDS day to fundraise for SIC and increase awareness. After many weeks of preparation, moments of stress and hard work from everyone, wearing our red T-shirts and ribbons we were excited for the week ahead to spread the word! We kicked off the events on Monday 25th November with a teacher training evening to recruit new teachers. All who attended were very enthusiastic and have already been to schools to get involved! With piles of tins and tupperwares full of wonderful red cakes, cook...

Evolving clinical phenotypes in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders
Purpose of review: To describe the changes in the presentation of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) comparing the current combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) treatment era to the pre-cART era. Recent findings: The frequency of the most severe stage of HAND, HIV-associated dementia (HAD), has decreased, but the frequencies of milder stages of HAND, asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI) and mild neurocognitive disorder, have increased. In the pre-cART era, HAD was a progressive disorder leading to death within months. With cART, HIV+ individuals with HAND frequently remain stable over many years, th...

Sequence-Based Predictive Models of Resistance to HIV-1 Integrase Inhibitors: An n-Grams Approach to Phenotype Assessment.
Abstract Amino acid substitutions in HIV-1 proteins critical to the viral replication cycle have the potential to undermine successful inhibition of those targets, with some mutations leading to either reduced susceptibility to certain medications or complete drug resistance. Phenotypic tests are best suited to quantify the effects of complex mutational patterns on drug resistance; however, the relatively high cost and long turnaround time associated with phenotyping has increased the demand for in silico drug-specific models capable of accurately predicting phenotype directly from the target protein sequences. Th...

Current Approaches in Computational Drug Resistance Prediction in HIV.
Abstract Today a broad range of antiretroviral drug regimens are applicable for the successful suppression of virus replication in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected people. However, there still remains an obstacle in therapy: the high mutation rate of the HI virus under drug pressure leads to resistant variants causing failure of permanent and effective treatment. Therefore, resistance testing is therefore inevitable to administer appropriate antiviral drugs to infected patients. By means of current high-throughput sequencing technologies, computational models have recently constituted important assistan...

Lessons learned from human HIV vaccine trials
Purpose of review: The ability to induce broadly neutralizing antibody (bNAb) responses is likely essential for development of a globally effective HIV vaccine. Unfortunately, human vaccine trials conducted to date have failed to elicit broad plasma neutralization of primary virus isolates. Despite this limitation, in-depth analysis of the vaccine-induced memory B-cell repertoire can provide valuable insights into the presence and function of subdominant B-cell responses, and identify initiation of antibody lineages that may be on a path towards development of neutralization breadth. Recent findings: Characterization of t...

Relation of Steatosis to Neurocognitive Function in People Living with HIV.
CONCLUSION: Although the sample size was relatively small our results show consistent correlations between the observed neurocognitive variables and metabolic parameters. As central obesity is one of the contributors to NCI it would be one of the modifiable factors to prevent further neurocognitive decline. PMID: 32106801 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
